Having so many different artists under the same roof is inspiring; it creates collaborations across disciplines and invites a broad audience. Höjden is an important voice in the cultural policy landscape: we organize many of Stockholm’s freelance artists and collaborate with, among others, Danscentrum Stockholm and the Union of Stage and Film (Scen och Film).

As a small organization, we can fill the gaps that exist in the field, respond quickly to needs, and—through our many members—propose simple solutions with wide reach, while also working long-term. For example, there is a lack of venues for the free sector, and therefore since 2024 we have organized the Höjden Festival to give works a longer life.

The current political situation makes it harder for artists to create: rents are rising, funding is decreasing, less art is being shown on stages and in institutions, and more artists are sharing smaller amounts of money. We want to counteract the trend toward individualization and competition. We need places where we can meet and organize ourselves so that the free scene can continue to flourish. At Höjden, we want to create a place where we share resources and support one another, as a living community—and together we become a stronger voice for the free cultural field.
