Höjden was founded in 2018 by a group of dance artists. Over six years, the organization was built collectively by various artists. Around twenty members had their daily operations in the house, but even more people attended the events organized by the members: performances, daily training sessions, workshops, open viewings, feedback sessions, and festivals.
After six fruitful but demanding years, with much work distributed among few people, Höjden still fell into a minor financial crisis every quarter due to soaring rents; we barely managed to break even. Therefore, in 2024, we chose to fundamentally restructure the organization. A new economic strategy featuring lower membership fees drastically increased the number of members, from around twenty artists to over 100, giving Höjden an entirely different weight in cultural policy.
Today, Höjden is a strong voice for the free sector and for artists' working conditions—both among artists themselves and between artists and institutions. What is unique about Höjden in this new form is precisely the approximately 100 artist practices that work on their own projects while simultaneously acting in relation to the field as a whole. Höjden is more active than ever, with renewed strength to stabilize the foundation that was built organically, and ready to seriously be the safe place for art and culture, for both audiences and practitioners.
